Giant inflatable monsters climb onto rooftops across the city centre for the whole of half term. Grab a map from the Tourism Centre on Smithy Row and go hunting for Howler, Snapper and the brand-new Rombald Rock Giant.

On Wednesday the Family of Phantoms parade glides out from the Central Library at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm, and the library's Creepy Crafts help the kids make a stick puppet to wave at it. Finally, a queue they will join without moaning.

Queen of Hockley is a bar and restaurant on Broad Street with a new autumn menu, and the one to order is the honey glazed pork belly on harissa mash, with buttered greens, apple done two ways and a cider jus.

The famous shin of beef chilli comes pulled, with lime and herbed rice, nachos and guacamole for scooping, plus a horseradish cream to wake you up. Sharing is up to you, and nobody is counting.

A ghost-hunting tour for 5 to 11 year olds, where the kids help the museum's over-worked Ghost Hunter catch the pesky ghosts causing mayhem around the building. Crafts and spooky games are built in, it lasts about an hour, and every child comes with a paying adult.

Wrap up warm, because the old prison gets chilly. Some slots have already sold out, so the brave ones book first.
